The SAAF would like to thank all pilots for their assistance in the success of the Final pre-FIFA World Cup Operation Shield Six and hope that all pilots will continue to work with them as diligently over the World Cup period. They remain committed to ensure, where possible within the security constraints at the time, all pilots can continue with their flight operations, both commercial and recreational.
Here are some stats from Operation Shield:
· Approximately 4000 SSC’s authorised to date. The SAAF were hoping for 6000 at this stage so please get yours in if you have not done so yet.
· 4900 flights have been authorised so far when restrictions have been in place.
· Shield Six used the model of the busiest match weekend scenario and added two more games to test their readiness. They believe they are ready.
· On that weekend 230 FAC’s were authorised. Only 7 were declined for security reasons.
· There were 24 phones at the Call centre manned with 24 operators working 24 hours a day over that period (as will be the case from the 26th of MAY 2010)
· They received many positive responses with thanks and only 7 official complaints.
In general going forward:
It has been observed that Pilots are not reading Notams giving further information on modifications to the AIP S044/2010.
They are looking into other methods to inform pilots.
In the Restricted areas around the stadiums the airspace will be operating on Airband frequency 132.25.
In the 5 Nm airspace around the stadiums there will be:
2 SAAF helicopters, 2 police helicopters, 1 or 2 official media helicopters, a SAAF caravan, and possibly a jet or two in the near vicinity as necessary.
As of the 26th may 2010, the FAC call centre is manned 24 / 7 for all FAC requests.
SAAF suggest it is better to phone for a FAC than to fax or email if you wish to make a single flight and wish for an immediate response. NB: Flight plans must still be sent to the normal flight plan receiving centre not to the centre.
For groups or schools, FAX or email FAC requests can be sent in but pilots must phone in to check receipt of your email or FAX.
Each pilot’s SSC is a unique code that should note be shared with anybody and not given to the police or any other official, only the FAC. The police or official will not ask you for your SSC. The SSC code allows a pilot to get a FAC, If another pilot uses your SSC code to obtain a FAC – the official owner of the SSC will be held responsible and action will be taken.
Please apply for your SSC if you have not already done so.
