Grasslands under threat PDF  | Print |  E-mail

This is an urgent notice for all the pilots flying in Pretoria at grasslands (groen goud).

The field is under threat! The squatters up on the hill have been terrorizing the owners of the farm to a point that they are now moving out of their home and relocating to Raslow. This will be in effect from the 1st October.
What has happened is the Squatters are stealing the copper from the pumps to irrigate the water and also breaking open the big electric motors that pump the water for the copper. They even started to break up the concrete slab that was laid to protect the cable from them.
When the owners stopped fixing this they are now stealing the meters that read the water and electricity to the residence. Every second night about 20 to 30 people come onto the property and the security guards are now being shot at and running gun battles are taking place. The police are called but only respond 3 hours later. They have even told them it is too dangerous for them to come out.
The squatters have told them they want the water in the river and to relocate the housing to the water on the farm. Apparently the area is filled with Zimbabweans, Mozambicans & Nigerians. The council drives 3 truck of water to there area every day and due to the expansion and influx of squatters things are being pushed to the limits now.
What can be done to protect our field from being over run by these illegal's? If any of you out there have any influence with some one or organization please let us know. Peoples lives are at stake and we will loose a fantastic flying field.
Apparently all the trouble only takes place from the time we have vacated the field in the evenings.
